What are the responsibilities of a CIS AmeriCorps Tutor?
The Communities In Schools (CIS) of Georgia AmeriCorps Foundations Tutorial program supports the CIS mission to help students stay in school and graduate. The CIS AmeriCorps program targets students who are not performing at grade level so they can improve their reading and math skills, advance to the next grade level and graduate. The CIS AmeriCorps members provide tutoring to students in elementary schools at CIS affiliates statewide.
For the 2020-2021 School Year the following affiliates will host AmeriCorps members:
· Communities In Schools of Candler County
· Communities In Schools of Milledgeville-Baldwin County
· Communities In Schools of Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County
· Dodge Connection-Communities In Schools and Family Connections of Dodge County
· Family Connections and Communities In Schools of Glascock County
· Family Connections and Communities In Schools of Hancock County
· Communities In Schools of Georgia in Troup County and Albany/Dooly
AmeriCorps members provide small group and one-on-one tutoring sessions designed to prepare students for academic success. Corps members also help to strengthen their communities by recruiting volunteers and participating in service projects ranging from neighborhood clean ups, food and clothing drives and emergency planning activities. AmeriCorps members are always excited to participate in statewide initiatives such as Swearing In Day, Martin Luther King, Jr, Day of Service and AmeriCorps Week where they use the opportunity to spread an ethic of service and civic engagement in their communities. AmeriCorps members are also engaged in personal and professional development during their experience.
For the 2019-2020 program year, AmeriCorps members provided over 16,000 service hours and recruited over 160 volunteers all while serving over 550 students, despite the challenges on schools shutdowns and COVID-19.
