CIS of Atlanta Opportunities

Tutoring

Tutors are needed to support 9th grade students in math at McNair High School.  The students are using an online tutorial system, so volunteers do not need to be a math expert. The tutor’s main role will be to help keep the students focused on the tutorial session and to help understand the questions/explanation given by the tutorial software.  Tutors are needed Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11:15 am – 12:15 pm.  A background check is required.  Click here to sign up.

Coan Middle School is in need of tutors for the subjects of math and writing for sixth and seventh grade students.  The time commitment is 2:15-3:30 pm, one day a week for sixth grade math and 8:55 –  10:00 am one day a week for seventh grade math and writing.  A background check is required.  Click here to sign up.

Reading is Fundamental Book Giveaways

Communities In Schools of Atlanta is in need of volunteers to assist with book give-aways through its partnership with Reading Is Fundamental.  Volunteers are needed to help sort books, distribute snacks, coordinate arts and crafts and/or read to students.  Click here to sign up.

CIS of Fitzgerald/Ben Hill County Opportunities

Mentors

Mentors are needed for 6-12 grade students at Ben Hill Middle School and Fitzgerald High School. The time commitment is at least two hours per month during the lunch period.  Mentors will receive an hour-long orientation at the beginning of the year. Tutors

Communities In Schools of Fitzgerald/Ben Hill County are in need of tutors for reading at either Ben Hill Elementary School or Ben Hill Primary School. Tutors are expected to provide forty-five minutes of reading assistance per week. A special volunteer orientation is held for tutors and a background check is required.  Click here to sign up.

CIS of Henry County Opportunities

Mentors

Mentors are needed for middle school students, grades 6-8, in Henry County. The time commitment is flexible, but volunteers are required to meet one hour a week for an entire school year.  Mentors must complete an orientation before being matched with their mentee. A background check is required.

CIS of Laurens County needs mentors for high school students, grades 9-12 at Dublin High Schools, East Laurens High School and the Performance Learning Center. The time commitment to be a mentor is at least one hour per week during the school day. Marietta Performance Learning Center

Mentoring

Mentors are needed for the Marietta Performance Learning Center, grades 9-12.  The time commitment to be a mentor is one hour per week and flexible scheduling is available based on mentor availability and student schedule. Mentors meet on school grounds during the school’s operating hours (generally 8-3). Training and mentor matching is provided at the school site.  A background check is required, as well as two references.  Click here to sign up.

Tutoring

The Marietta Performance Learning Center is in need of tutors for grades 9-12.  Tutors meet on school grounds during the school’s operating hours (generally 8-3) for one hour per week. Tutors must complete a one-hour training session at the CIS of Marietta/Cobb County office that teaches techniques that would be helpful for tutoring.  A background check and two references are required.  Click here to sign up.

Job Shadowing

Local business professionals are needed to participate in job shadowing for Marietta PLC students.  The time commitment is one day per week from 9am – 12pm or 9am – 2pm.  Students will follow business professionals in a one-on-one capacity or group setting to expand the student’s knowledge of certain careers and vocations.  Click here to sign up.

Internships

The Marietta Performance Learning Center is looking to partner with local businesses for internships for its students.  The time commitment for the internship is tailored to suit the needs of the business.   The goal of the internship is to give students access to primary jobs normally not available to high school students.  Internships through the PLC may be offered in any fields included, but not limited to manufacturing, health care, banking, administration, travel, hospitality, communications and construction.  Click here to sign up.

Dress for Success Closet

The Marietta Performance Learning Center is in need of clothing items for its Dress for Success program, as well as for when students attend job shadowing, internships and interviews if they cannot afford the appropriate items. Specific items needed include women’s business casual attire and shoes and men’s belts of all sizes.  Click here to sign up.

Urban School Garden

The Marietta Performance Learning Center is looking for a volunteer master gardener to provide guidance in the following areas:

  • The best plans to grow
  • What time of year to grow the plants
  • When it is time to harvest the plants
  • Cultivation and distribution of vegetables/plants

The PLC is also looking to add more flower/vegetable beds, an updated irrigation system and fencing.  Click here to sign up.

Mentors

Communities In Schools of Troup County needs volunteers to serve as mentors for students, grades 6-12. The time commitment to be a mentor is at least one hour per week. Mentors are able to meet with their students during school, extension periods, after-school, and in-school suspension.  Click here to sign up.

Tutors

Tutors are needed for students, grades 6-12, the subjects of math, language arts/English and science. Tutors can provide services during school hours, lunch and/or extension periods to students at Long Cane Middle School, Callaway Middle School or Callaway High School.  Volunteers serving students at Gardner Newman must meet with their students after school hours.  Click here to sign up.

Clothes Closet

Communities In Schools of Troup County is seeking casual and athletic clothing and shoes in all adult sizes for both males and females. The clothing needs to be appropriate for school wear.  Click here to sign up.

Food-Backpack Program

Donations are needed for the Communities In Schools of Troup County food-backpack program.   Items are placed in backpacks of students who are reported as not having substantial food and/or power. Accepted items must be non-perishable such as but not limited to: fruit cups, juice boxes, microwavable meals or those that only require hot water, crackers and peanut butter.  Click here to sign up.

Mentors

Communities In Schools of Turner County needs mentors for 30 minutes per week to work with students, grades K-8 at Turner County Elementary School and Turner County Middle School.  A 2 hour training is provided and a background check is required.  Click here to sign up.

Summer Feeding Program

Communities In Schools of Turner County is looking for volunteers to help with its “Food for Thought” program from June through August.  Volunteers are needed to help distribute lunches and lead activities for children throughout the community at each feeding location.  The time commitment is 1.5 hours per day, five days a week.  Click here to sign up.

Career Speakers

Volunteers are being recruited as career speakers at Turner County Middle School.  Volunteers are expected to visit the school and share with students information about their career.  The time commitment is one day during the school year for four hours.  Click here to sign up.
