Communities In Schools (CIS) of Milledgeville/Baldwin County partnered with the Georgia College GIVE Center to host a Day of Service clean-up project on January 20th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The project focused on school beautification at three schools served by CIS: Creekside Elementary, Eagle Ridge Elementary and the Early Learning Center.
More than 150 volunteers, including CIS AmeriCorps members, donated their time to honor the legacy and vision of Dr. King. The involvement of CIS AmeriCorps members during statewide initiatives such as MLK Day of Service provides an opportunity to spread an ethic of service and civic engagement in their communities. Other volunteers included Baldwin County school district employeees, religious groups and Boy Scouts. Georgia College students also took time to read excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches as a way to remind volunteers the purpose of their service.
