Communities In Schools (CIS) of Milledgeville/Baldwin County recently hosted a training for local teachers focused on helping students develop better reading skills. The training was conducted by Sarah Hawthorne of AlphaSkills.
Principals in the Baldwin County school district selected 26 teachers ranging in grades kindergarten through fifth to participate in the training. The purpose of the training was to provide a guided reading instruction to help develop vocabulary, fluency and comprehension using texts on the students’ reading levels. The teachers were not only trained on the strategies for guided reading sessions, but witnessed the methods used on selected students.
Upon completion of the training, the teachers will take the training to each of their classrooms to provide assistance to students who will receive differentiated instruction to develop reading skills. Each teacher will be working with a classroom of 25 students.
CIS of Milledgeville/Baldwin County executive director Sandy Baxter felt this training not only would benefit the students, but aligned with the teachers’ commitments to learning. “Teachers in the Baldwin County School System have a personal commitment to lifelong learning to ensure our students have the best,” Baxter said. “CIS of Milledgeville/Baldwin County was proud to be able to work with CIS of Georgia and AlphaSkills to provide this training for our teachers.“
