Many have heard or read that the average new cohort graduation rate in Georgia is 67%; some school districts hover between 50-55%, while others are lower.
The Communities In Schools (CIS) affiliate network plans to focus on helping schools increase graduation rates by bringing together business leaders and others concerned to discuss solutions and the economic affects dropouts have on communities. CIS of Georgia is providing more support to local affiliates by helping them strengthen boards, raise more funds and recruit additional volunteers.
One example of work in progress is with CIS of Augusta/Richmond County. CIS of Georgia is increasing technical assistance, board training and advocacy, including assistance with a recent community forum. CIS of Augusta board members and forum participants are identifying community resources to help their school district improve graduation rates in the eight public high schools that are below the state average. One powerful dropout solution is the CIS research-based model. Site coordinators are the foundation of the model, and help students with academic and non-academic needs to ensure progress and success. Coordinators listen to student’s issues, find mentors and tutors and help improve behavior and attendance. CIS of Augusta needs community support to help raise money to place site coordinators in low performing schools. They also need businesses and civic groups to recruit and then coordinate volunteer activities to foster community engagement.
