Celebrating Seniors: Heydi Ixmay

Heydi Ixmay, an 18-year-old Communities In Schools of Georgia in Albany/Dougherty County student, attends CIS Teen Journey, a program dedicated to helping teen moms graduate high school.

When her son became sick, she worried about missing some of her classes in order to take him to doctor’s appointments. Because of Teen Journey Site Coordinator, Tiffany Carr, Heidi’s challenges were communicated to her teachers and her schoolwork was supplied so she wouldn’t fall behind in class.

The challenges faced by teen mom’s are immense. Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age. By introducing CIS Teen Journey, CIS can target parenting and expecting teens through existing school system connections and walk by their side as they complete their high school journey.

In a survey of 11 students participating in CIS Teen Journey, they reported overwhelmingly positive feelings:

Ms. Carr lets me express my feelings and thoughts of the day, which gives me a break from being a parent. She also helps us keep our grades up by offering tutors. She brings people that can help us with inspiration speeches or things we need for our babies. The program with Ms. Carr has made this school year so much interesting and less stressful.

This year Heydi has maintained AB honor roll grades. She is proud that she is attending class regularly, even when things get difficult and she is needed at home.

After graduating in Monroe Comprehensive High School she plans to attend college as a business major and eventually open her own business.
