Communities in Schools Georgia meets students where they are. This is a no judgement zone…a place where students can transform their lives.
Dr. Craig Lockhart, Superintendent, Dooly County School System Connections – CIS Cornerstone for Success
Dooly County Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart is a passionate believer in the power of CIS. “If I had to give you Communities in Schools Georgia in one word? Relationships. CIS helps students connect with their peers, teachers and parents in a whole new way. This is transformational,” he advocates.
Dr. Lockhart believes the connections CIS fosters – between students and adults – allows each young person to develop key skills needed for future success. Through CIS programs, students learn how to navigate peer conflict resolution and improve interactions with their parents and teachers. But CIS doesn’t just help students, he notes. “Parents are becoming better coaches. Our teachers are gaining new tools to help students work through challenges.”
Dr. Lockhart says the CIS site coordinator, Berkima Williams, is a powerful force in their school community. “She takes students on field trips to show them what the world has to offer, to show them opportunities beyond what they experience day-to-day. She plans graduations for at-risk elementary students who have achieved their goals in preparation for middle school.”
From grades and attendance, to self-esteem and behavior – the CIS model of integrated support incorporates teaching social-emotional skills that are needed for success in the 21st century. “Learning these socialization skills is essential,” explains Dr. Lockhart.
For 30 years, CIS Georgia has been helping students realize their potential and plan their futures – and Dr. Lockhart sees the organization playing an important role in Dooly county.
