For the past three years CIS of Candler staff and volunteers served hot chocolate and sold it at the Christmas Festival, and this year they didn’t let the Festival’s cancellation stop them from spreading holiday cheer. Their partner of four years, IHS Pharmacy, and employee Jill Akinson—who came up with the idea for the fundraiser, offered to help CIS set up outside the store. The company also furnished coffee and condiments, while CIS Candler Executive Director, Roberta Graham, whipped up hot chocolate and baked tasty treats. Mary Thaler, Site coordinator, Maggie Hadden, and Audra Lee served guests stopping by to support CIS.
Three buses, two pickup trucks, and an SUV filled with wrapping paper was donated by the Statesboro Humane Society thanks to CIS Candler board member, Mary Thaler, who connected with a Humane Society Board Member. The local Chamber of Commerce stepped in to set up pop up shop and sell all that wrapping paper. Together they raised important awareness of the CIS mission and $2,775 to help students during COVID-19.
“I have a great team and community here that helps all the time!” said Roberta in praise of all the hard work done by her staff and her partners.
The winter work of CIS Candler staff also includes the Elf Tree, which has been giving to kids for seven years. Case managed families, Candler County School System teachers, and other generous community members choose a child and purchase gifts for them, helping 21 families this year.
Another success this is the first CIS Candler raffle, raising $1,965 from a Yeti Cooler donation and $250 from a tiger throw made by Roberta. And, the prizes are still coming and winners are announced live on Facebook as staff embraces the digital climate of this difficult time.
Not only all that, a big back to school supply give away with the Metter Police Department, Cedar Street Church, Candler county sheriff department, Grace Community church, Metter First Baptist church, and of course all of their our board members helped students stay engaged in schoolwork.
