Communities In Schools (CIS) of Georgia local affiliates Dodge and Laurens counties were recently awarded one of six youth development grants through the Governor’s Office for Children and Families (GOCF).

Each affiliate will use the grant to further efforts of after-school programs.  CIS of Dodge County will add 1.5 hours a day of fitness services during the school year, and four hours a day in the summer to their program for elementary school youth.  CIS of Laurens County will support elementary school youth through the creation of the YES Program (Youth Excelling and Succeeding) by adding grade level reading services, while supplementing the quality of nutritious snacks and fitness services that are already being provided.

The CIS affiliates selected for the grant will help continue to bring awareness and support to the importance of after school programming to a child’s academic success. Because of the demands placed on Georgia’s working families and an increasing need for positive, enriching opportunities when kids are not in school, GOCF has worked to make available after-school programs.  These programs allow communities to thrive and encourage children and families to realize their greatest potential.

Visit the Dodge County and Laurens County websites for more information on their after school programs and services.
