The Marietta Performance Learning Center (PLC) recently received a donation of gift cards and monetary incentives from its local Rotary Club. The donations will be used as rewards and incentives for the PLC’s students in the areas of good attendance, consistent progress, improved behavior and the completion of graduation requirements. Performance Learning Centers, which are small high schools geared towards students who are not succeeding in the traditional school setting, are part of how Communities In Schools (CIS) makes a difference in the lives of at-risk students.
Communities who have CIS programs see an increase in school completion rates, attendance and academic achievement, and a decrease in violence and disruption. When implementing the CIS Model, local affiliates provide programs based on the unique needs of the community being served. Additionally, a five-year study concluded that the Communities In Schools model demonstrated the strongest reduction in dropout rates of any existing full scaled dropout prevention program in the country. The study also showed that CIS is unique in having an effect on both reducing the dropout rates and increasing graduation rates.
All local CIS affiliates welcome donations, such as gift cards, to help at-risk students reach their potential.
