From Tragedy to Triumph
Meet a Communities in Schools of Georgia 9th grader. He’s courageous, optimistic and future-focused. He enjoys his history and biology classes, and dreams of college and then medical school. With a flair for Italian cooking, he’s a fan of the Seahawks, R&B and country music. He works parttime at Chick-fil-A and plans to volunteer at the local hospital, veterinarian and food kitchen this summer because he likes giving back to his community. You’d think – given his light-up-a-room smile and aspirations – that his young life has been free of hardship…no bumps in the road, no obstacles to overcome.
But Tamarion’s 15 years have not been easy. He moved half a dozen times in a decade, survived mental and physical abuse, lived with drug users and dealers, was separated from his siblings at times, and tragically lost loved ones. At age 5, he felt a crushing responsibility to provide food for his little sister. Although he felt lonely and, at times, depressed, there is a radiance that shines brightly inside Tamarion. He has channeled tragedy into triumph. Perhaps Maya Angelou best captured Tamarion’s courage when she said, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”
Tamarion says he takes one day at a time. He relies on the love and guidance of his grandmother who he calls a “best friend”. He also praises the support and understanding he receives from Communities In Schools, particularly his site coordinator.
“CIS is like family. Mrs. Ali listens to me and never judges. I know she is always there for me.”
Ali Jennings is CIS site coordinator at Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School, serving Communities In Schools of Catoosa County, part of the Communities In Schools of Georgia affiliate network. She is in charge of the Student Success Center, which includes a clothing closet, a food pantry, and tutoring.
Communities in Schools believes greatness exists in every child. By meeting students where they are to listen, learn and love, CIS GA helps kids realize their potential and plan for future success. In 2020, CIS GA served 88,978 students in 36 school districts, many of whose life experiences are similar to Tamarion’s. Mrs. Jennings says Tamarion is thriving in high school.
“He is a smart, amazing kid who has overcome so much. I am inspired by his ability to power on each day. He hopes that by sharing his story, others will know they are not alone and that there is help.”
Let your light shine on, Tamarion. We will be cheering for you…every step of the way.
