Student Achievement Month (SAM) is one of our favorite times of the year. This annual event recognizes CIS students, grades K-12, who are sometimes overlooked and often expected to underachieve. SAM boosts student’s confidence and helps them set new goals and gain a better understanding of the importance of academic achievement and succeeding in school.

Hundreds of CIS students throughout Georgia participate. Our sponsors help CIS provide prizes valued up to $1,000, including scholarships for high school seniors.

Travis has created a fantastic website showing us his journey with Communities in Schools, that we’d like to highlight here. But first, a little about Travis, in his own words:

I am a young man being raised in a single-parent home by my father. I have 2 other siblings that live with my mother. At times I feel life and school would be so much better for me if everyone had patience to help me. But that’s where Dr. Warren comes in because she is like a mom to me. Some of the students even call her mom and granny. When I am around her I can laugh, be myself and talk about anything. She understands me. That’s one reason CIS has been good for me.

Travis says that Communities in Schools has given him “a new attitude about being in high school” feels optimistic about the great things to come.

Join us in congratulating Travis and wish him and all of the other regional SAM winners good luck in the State finals!

State winners will be announced the second week in April and will be honored at a luncheon on May 7 at the downtown Hyatt Regency. If you would like to purchase a table of 8 for the SAM luncheon (with a student/parent at your table), the cost is $2,500. You can also purchase 4 seats to the event for $1,500. Sponsorship dollars help us provide prizes and scholarships for high school seniors. Email cbroussard(at)cisgeorgia.org for more information.
