Connecting at-risk students to community resources can provide exposure to career opportunities, while gaining much-needed experience and a head start towards a successful future. One of CIS’ Five Basics is a marketable skill to use upon graduation. Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta partnered with the CEO Project at Westlake High School to introduce students to careers in computer technology.
The service learning project provided the fundamentals to build new desktops from scratch. The newly-built computers were then donated to several families in the Westlake community.
To help students consider post-secondary education opportunities and career readiness upon graduation, they also had the opportunity to meet a video game programmer. The programmer provided information about various job opportunities in computer technology and the requirements needed for success.
