CIS Performance Learning Centers ® (PLCs) are small high schools that provide non-conventional learning options for students not succeeding in the traditional high school setting. PLCs require students to have an Individual Development Plan (IDP). Whether students will be attending college or entering the work force, their individual plans are strengthened as they are exposed to college visits, guest speakers, resume writing assistance, and job shadowing and internship opportunities.
In addition to the IDP, the Carrollton PLC uses a variety of events and programs to get students prepared for graduation, college and careers. Their work-based learning program allows students to get a head-start on potential careers through internships and career-related education experiences, while completing high school graduation requirements.
Mark Holley’s internship at Atlanta Prosthetics and Orthotics is providing him with hands-on experience while learning about the process of building prosthetics. Mark sees the program as a positive experience and chose it as a good way to gain first-hand knowledge in his desired field. “The work-based learning program has helped me stay motivated and I’m looking forward to going to school,” Holley said. “I hope to go into the prosthetics field after high school and this experience helps me prepare for that.”
Upon graduation Holley plans to attend St. Petersburg College in Florida and work towards a Bachelor’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics.
